The National Museum and Research Center of Altamira is located in Santillana del Mar, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, in northern Spain. This museum’s main objective is to preserve and publicize one of the most important archaeological treasures in the country: the famous cave paintings of the Altamira Cave. The museum was built to protect the Altamira Cave, since constant exposure to air and light caused deterioration in the prehistoric paintings. That is why it was decided to close the cave to the public and create a space where its interior could be faithfully replicated, allowing visitors to enjoy an experience close to the real thing. The National Museum and Research Center of Altamira was inaugurated in 2001 and since then it has been a reference in the dissemination of prehistory.
