Museum – National Museum and Research Center of Altamira – Santillana del Mar
The National Museum and Research Center of Altamira is located in Santillana del Mar, in the autonomous community of Cantabria, in northern Spain. This museum’s main objective is to preserve and publicize one of the most important archaeological treasures in the country: the famous cave paintings of the Altamira Cave. The museum was built to protect the Altamira Cave, since constant exposure to air and light caused deterioration in the prehistoric paintings. That is why it was decided to close the cave to the public and create a space where its interior could be faithfully replicated, allowing visitors to enjoy an experience close to the real thing. The National Museum and Research Center of Altamira was inaugurated in 2001 and since then it has been a reference in the dissemination of prehistory. The building integrates perfectly with the environment, since a large part of its structure is underground, trying not to interfere with the natural landscape of the area. Inside, the museum houses an extensive collection that allows us to understand the importance of Altamira in the history of humanity. You can see replicas of the original paintings, as well as tools and objects used by the ancient inhabitants of the cave. It also has a projection room where the discovery of the cave is explained and contextualized in the historical and artistic context. In addition, the museum has a research center where studies on prehistory are carried out and the rock art of the region is investigated. This center also offers educational programs and activities for schoolchildren, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of cultural heritage conservation. In short, the Altamira National Museum and Research Center in Santillana del Mar is an essential place for all those interested in prehistory and rock art. It offers a unique and enriching experience that allows you to get up close and personal with one of humanity’s oldest artistic manifestations.
