Archaeological Museum – MAHE – Archaeological and History Museum of Elche – Elche
The Archaeological and History Museum of Elche (MAHE) is a museum located in the city of Elche, in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, Spain. The building in which the museum is located is known as the “Casa de la Festa” and was designed by the architect Daniel Bañuls y Ferri in the 18th century. The museum houses a wide collection of archaeological artifacts spanning from Prehistory to medieval times, with a special focus on Iberian and Roman culture. Among its most notable pieces are the Lady of Elche, an Iberian sculpture from the 5th century BC that has become an emblem of the city, and the Lady of Guardamar, another Iberian sculpture of great historical and artistic value. The tour of the museum is organized chronologically, starting with Prehistory and covering the different stages of the region’s history, including Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and medieval culture. Elements related to Arab culture and the time of the reconquest are also exhibited. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the MAHE organizes temporary exhibitions, conferences, workshops and educational activities for audiences of all ages. It also has a research center that promotes the study and dissemination of the archaeological and historical heritage of the region. The museum is located in a privileged location, in the historic center of Elche, very close to other places of interest such as the famous Palmeral of Elche, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and the archaeological site of La Alcudia, which was the most important Ibero-Roman settlement in the area. In summary, the Archaeological and History Museum of Elche is a space dedicated to the conservation, study and dissemination of the archaeological and historical heritage of the region, which offers a unique opportunity to learn about the rich history of Elche and its surroundings.
